I don't really like movies. I don't have anything against movies, I just don't really enjoy seeing them. So last night, when some friends suggested a movie night at my house, I was less than excited. But I went along because I like my friends. And I am glad that I did.
One of my friends had the movie "Jump." It is about a guy who has the ability to jump through portals of space I suppose and can go from Rome to Egypt in an instant. Fascinating really.
It got me thinking about God. The God who is bigger than time and space and imagination. The God who created the time and space. Amazing. I have some friends who talk about "transportation" some times and by that I mean the Holy Spirit sort of experience that Philip encountered in Acts 8. Some of my friends have heard about or know people who have experienced their own type of transcending time and space. Not with all of the drama and action from the movie Jump, and maybe or maybe not like what Philip experienced. But times where people arrived at the right place at the right time when it had not seemed possible, almost like time stood still for them for a moment. Or even going into a room and walking out in another building than where they started. Astonishing. Hard to fathom. Difficult to believe. Maybe even crazy.
Until I start to consider a God that is not bound by worldly terms. And I ponder His Word. I have heard it said that if you stick a new believer in a room with a Bible and tell him nothing about the Lord, he will come out with a much different picture of God than most Christians today have. And for good reason. If I take God at His Word and believe that He is who He says he is in the Bible and acts like He did in the Bible then my picture of Him changes drastically. He really did send supernatural manna from Heaven to His people. He really did raise people from the dead. He really did heal the lepers. He really did restore sight. He really did tell the Woman at the Well all about her own life. He really did cause Philip to transcend time and space in order to give the message of salvation to a eunuch. If He is the faithful and true, never changing, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, then why would be so hard to imagine that He might continue throughout the ages to act in ways that would defy man's logic?
The truth is, when I began to believe in the God presented by scripture, it's not too hard to imagine. It's really not about miracles or signs and wonders or debating about what and why God might or might not do a certain thing. It is about the acknowledgement that God does act in ways beyond my understanding. That He is not defined by my mind. No, that instead He defines my mind! That the only understanding I can begin to have about Him is that which He Himself gives me.
So, I say, God do what you love to do. Surprise us, fascinate us, blow our minds. You are the Eternal One, the Everlasting. There is nothing too big or too hard for You.
