The Story of Us (So Far)

This is a story about a boy and a girl who loved Jesus first.

And then they loved each other.

The girl’s name is Holly and the boy’s name is Lance.

They met while doing urban ministry at Central Church of Christ in 2001. They had respect for each other, enjoyed serving children and families together and teaching others about God.

And then they went their separate ways. She finished graduate school and became a therapist. He went home and did a preaching internship and then an internship at the House of Prayer.

And then, they ran into each other several years later. As they talked, they realized that the journeys they were on with the Lord were amazingly similar. And that they were both excited to seek deep relationship and knowledge of the Lord.

And they just so happened to attend the same House Church.

And they kept on being friends.

Then one day, Holly asked Lance to go with her while she shared some things with a friend that the Lord had laid on her heart. And he prayed for her and their friend, and he went.

After that, they began to build a deeper friendship. They prayed together, they ate together (she mostly cooked and it was delicious), they served others together and they took lots of walks. One day, he told her that he thought he might want to marry her. But Holly wisely didn’t say much at that time because Lance, though he thought he might want to marry Holly, also said he wasn’t absolutely certain he wanted to live the rest of his life as a married man.

It so happened that one beautiful evening in August, he took her to the lake where they sat and watched the sunset and talked and he kissed her. In his heart he was deciding he did want to be a husband, but not just anyone’s. He wanted to be Holly’s husband.

Five months later, Lance took her back to the place it all started, a little white house behind the Central Church of Christ, and asked her to spend her life with him.

And she said yes.
